Our Culture
|

|
|
|
We hear it time and time again from employees. When we ask, "What made you decide to join Burke?" or "What keeps you here?" the answer is usually the same: "It's Burke's culture."
Burke was recently named #1 Top Workplace in the Enquirer Media 2011Top Workplaces competition. We placed 1st among mid-sized companies in the greater Cincinnati area, and we think you'll understand why! Due to a work environment that fosters open communication, feedback, growth and learning opportunities, and employee involvement, our employee turnover rate of less than 5 percent is well below the industry average.
100% Employee Owned
Burke offers all full-time employees the opportunity to own employee stock in the company through our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The ESOP is not a stock purchase or matching program; you do not contribute your own money to the ESOP. The stock is given to you for being an employee… it's free! Along with this pride and accountability of ownership comes a strong desire for all employees to contribute to the organization's goals. We work together to deliver a quality product to our customers, and there is a shared commitment to understand and exceed the expectations of our customers that permeates everything we do.
Open Communication and Feedback
Open communication is a key component of our culture. We have an open feedback system so employees can give year-round feedback to each other. The president of Burke holds employee discussion groups monthly to exchange information with staff members. Our employees can share their thoughts about working at Burke through an on-line opinion survey. Employee committees, such as our Advisory Council, make recommendations for process improvements. Company financials are reviewed with all employees at quarterly employee meetings, and the company intranet site, email and quarterly newsletters help keep everyone connected.

The environment at Burke is casual in many ways, including in the informality of our work relationships. Employees at all levels interact with each other as needed to get the job done. We strive to minimize strict rules and structures in favor of openness and innovation. Our employees enjoy working together, but they like having fun together, too. Our Events Committee plans monthly activities, including an annual summer picnic, holiday dinner-dance, and "Opening Day" celebration.

Employee Growth and Learning
The growth and learning of employees is a high priority. New employees are assigned a mentor and participate in a comprehensive new hire training program, which includes extensive hands-on learning, as well as the opportunity to meet with and learn from other employees in various functions across the company. Software and other technical training opportunities are also offered so everyone can take advantage of the state-of-the-art technology available at work. Employees are encouraged to develop expertise in their functional area and to "branch out" through cross-training.

Community Involvement
We support our community in various ways, including a United Way Employee Campaign, Fine Arts Fund Drive and participation in Junior Achievement. Since 1985, we have been a "Partner in Education" with Rees E. Price Academy Elementary. Our employees generously volunteer to serve as pen pals and tutors to Rees E. Price Academy students, as well as furnishing less-fortunate students with school supplies. These are just a few of the ways we try to give back to our community.
