Children’s Artistry Inspires Burke, Inc. to Redecorate Lobby

CINCINNATI (Sept. 12, 2000)—What’s the first thing you notice when you walk into the lobby of a multi-million-dollar, international corporation? Is it the expensive marble fountains or maybe the intimidating security guard? At Burke, Inc., the first thing you notice is the priceless works of art. However, this art is not priceless because of some famous artist, it’s priceless because of the 10 elementary school children who created it.

Burke Inc.’s lobby is now full of bright and colorful artwork penned, or crayoned, by kids from Whittier Elementary, their partner in education. Burke’s president, Michael Baumgardner, understands the value of art in education and had the idea to brighten up the corporate office with the student art.

"I know the impact art classes have on creating a well rounded education for these students and now their artwork has a positive impact on us," said Baumgardner. "Every day when our employees and visitors walk through the lobby they can be reminded of our commitment to our partnership with Whittier while enjoying the students’ creativity."

Whittier’s art teacher, Kim Kilby, selected a total of 10 pieces of art representing all six grades in the elementary school. Burke then had the artwork professionally matted, framed and hung in the corporate office’s lobby. The gallery of artwork will be changed once or twice a year and the framed pieces will be returned to the student to display in their own home.

Burke, Inc. has been involved with Whittier Elementary School since 1985 through the Partners In Education program. Burke participates in activities with Whittier such as tutoring, a yearly school supply drive, a pen pal program, holiday caroling parties and Junior Achievement.
